Chuan Tian Xia Rockville Revisit: Sichuan Heat, Comfort, and Steamed Striped Bass

If you're craving Sichuan food - especially that signature numbing heat - and happen to live in the DC metro area, Chuan Tian Xia is a restaurant worth considering.

Chuan Tian Xia in Rockville was formerly known as Good Harvest. According to public records, Good Harvest opened in Rockville in 2020 as an overseas location of a Chinese hot pot chain. By 2023, Chinese-language media reported that the restaurant had been taken over by Chuan Tian Xia following the pandemic. Interestingly, Montgomery County liquor license records still list the address as Good Harvest, with the license held by HS Harvest, Inc. This suggests that the original business entity and location remained in place, while the brand and operating team changed, rather than the restaurant being an entirely new establishment.

The dining room has the welcoming feel of a well-established family restaurant. The space is open and comfortable, with plenty of room between tables, making it easy to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Spicy Chicken with Bone (Jianghu Chili Chicken)

My favorite dish is the Spicy Chicken with Bone (Jianghu Chili Chicken). I've loved nibbling meat off the bone ever since I was a kid, savoring each bite little by little. The numbing Sichuan peppercorns, fiery chilies, and rich aroma linger with every mouthful. On one visit, the chef seemed to put an unexpected twist on the dish - the chicken wasn't deep-fried as it usually is. Surprisingly, I liked it even better. With less oil, the natural flavor of the chicken came through more clearly.

Wanzhou Grilled Striped Bass and Steamed Striped Bass

Chuan Tian Xia is probably best known for its fish dishes, and many diners order the Wanzhou Grilled Striped Bass. My personal favorite, however, is the Steamed Striped Bass. Lightly seasoned with just a touch of chili, it's exceptionally fresh without any fishy taste. The meat is tender, delicate, and naturally sweet - one of those dishes that makes it easy to finish the entire fish.
